1. Hi! Please introduce yourself to those who might not know you.
Hey! my name is Rae and I am the lead singer in the band rosecoloredworld based out of Los Angeles and I’m happy to chat with you guys today <3
2. Looking back, when did you first know that being a musician was your dream? Was there a person, artist, or experience that helped solidify it?
I have a unique experience to playing music because my dad was in a cover band that played on the beach in South Florida every single Sunday. I would try to go to as many of these shows that I could as a kid and every once and a while I would come sing on stage with the whole band (when I was 9 I made the entire band full of dudes learn complicated by Avril Lavigne. I guess I’ve always been strong willed). So really those days at the beach made me want to feel that feeling all the time and I decided to seriously pursue it most of my existence.
3. Your debut album, The Gift of Desperation, is coming out December 11. What was the inspiration behind the title? What can fans expect from this record?
You know we have been through so much as a band to get to a place where we had the opportunity to finally release an album. During the writing process which spanned over the course of a year and a half, we realized so much that we’ve overcome (separately and together). I think when you’re in the trenches going through it, it’s hard to understand WHY difficult moments are happening. But as the songs began to take shape in the studio, I thought “wait, all of this shit we have gone through has been the greatest gift we ever could have received because now we have something worth talking about.” The hardest moments led us to our best songs and the singles that have already been released have led us to some incredible people.
4. Were there any artists, albums, or specific sounds that influenced the direction of the album?
OH YEAH. Sum 41 and Jimmy Eat World have been a huge influence on us as a band. We also adore Simple Plan, Green Day, Paramore, and My Chemical Romance. You can FEEL how intentional those records by the bands were. And we wanted our first album to be a labor or love and devotion to the craft of creating something special.
5. Is there a song on the album that feels personal to you?
“rock bottom has a basement,” is extremely personal to me. someone very, very close to me has been battling addiction since I’m a kid. I wrote the phrase down in my phone after a horrible conversation with this person. It made me feel like the floor was ripped out from under me hence the title. (It was actually a different conversation with the same person that inspired the title) Also, count the stars is deeply personal and is about all the ones we’ve lost along the way and how much their absence changes how we show up in life.
6. Once you had all the songs written and recorded, how did you decide which ones belonged on the album? What went into shaping the final tracklist and the overall creative direction?
We actually made this record in Atlanta, Georgia with ZK Productions (Kenneth Mount and Zack Odom) who are absolute super producers/taste makers. We made 3 different trips there over the course of the year finishing all 10 songs. We came there with a ton of demos and ended up using 8 of our original ideas that were mostly flushed out and then wrote 2 additional ones as a full band in their studio. The process was super fulfilling and having them help guide the process of our debut album with so much care is something I’ll never forget.
7. You’re on the road with Bowling for Soup. What is that experience like? Are there any takeaways you’ve learned with being on tour with an iconic band that has been doing this for so long?
Yes!!! We are on the road with them right this second actually. First of all, Jaret Reddick is the definition of an absolute rockstar. Watching him play on stage in front of thousands of people is like watching someone super comfortable in their living room. He owns the stage and makes people feel less alone. The whole band is amazing (Rob and Gary) but seeing the way they treat their fans and crew is truly what I aspire to someday have our legacy be.
8. How do you feel like you’ve grown as an artist since you first started the band? It’s crazy to think about now but when the idea of rosecoloredworld started I did not have nearly as much confidence. I mean we live in a world run by men telling us how we should look, what is “acceptable” to say, how to behave, and what has worked in the past. Not to sound lame or cliche, but in my eyes, I was a tiny little caterpillar. And really over the last few years I’ve broken out of my cocoon and stopped being afraid to say what I want or how I feel on or off the stage.
9. As a male and female duo, have you faced any unique challenges or experiences navigating the music industry? How do you feel those experiences have shaped your career and the way you approach your music?
The short answer is: Yes. I have experienced my own challenges, and we have had plenty together as a duo. But to be honest, I really don’t take on the opinions of other people. I’ve always had a strange ability to kind of block out anything that doesn’t feel good and to focus on conversations, people and opportunities that feel in alignment with the two of us.
10. Growing up, who were the artists that made you think, "I want to do this"?
I remember seeing: All American- Rejects, Blink-182, Plain White Ts, and Boys like Girls all come through my hometown and wanting to be in a band and play shows so bad. Still love all those bands today (fun fact I’m actually in the Plain White T’s music video for their song “Would You Even”
11. You both come from different parts of the country, with one of you from South Florida and the other from Long Island. How have the music scenes and cultures you grew up around shaped the way you create together?
This is an awesome question and it’s actually nuts how us growing up EXACTLY where we did influenced our sound. Being from South Florida we had bands like: A day to Remember (shout out Tom Denney for being an early believer in the band) Dashboard Confessional, Hey Monday, and Newfound Glory. And simultaneously bands similar to that were breaking in Long Island like Taking Back Sunday, Bayside and Brand New. Just insane that in BOTH places we grew up the scene was alive and thriving.
12. If rosecoloredworld had to cover an entire album front-to-back, what album would you choose?
Probably Bleed American by Jimmy Eat World that whole record rips and it would be fun to do all the harmonies with Addison.
13. What’s a musical achievement from this past year that you’re proud of?I’m really proud of us getting on all 3 US Warped Tours, this debut album, and honestly just all around our ability as a band to persevere to even get to this point.
14. What’s next?
After our debut album we plan to continue to rip shows, write songs, play festivals and continue to enjoy the ride of being in this band alongside some of the best people I know.
